Greatfield Small Animal Rescue was founded in early 2020 to provide a safe place for small domestic animals who need care, time and the chance to find the right home.
We are based in Kidderminster and support animals from a wide surrounding area. Every animal stays with us until they are ready for their forever home, whether that takes days, weeks or much longer.
Some animals need more time, patience and confidence before they are ready for their next chapter.
We care for animals from the moment they arrive, through assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and rehoming, with ongoing support where it is needed.
Greatfield Small Animal Rescue began in early 2020 as a safe haven for small domestic animals needing a new home. Since then, the rescue has grown into a small but committed community of people helping animals through care, fostering, transport, admin, fundraising and support.
We are home-run, which means the animals are part of daily life here. Some arrive ready to move on quickly. Others need quiet handling, veterinary care, confidence building or a long period of stability before they are ready.
Everyone involved gives their time for free, so support goes directly towards the animals: food, bedding, housing, enrichment, treatment, neutering, vaccinations and the daily work that keeps them safe.
Small animal rescue is not just about taking animals in. It is about understanding their physical needs, emotional wellbeing and the support people may need too.
Every animal is monitored and assessed for their physical and emotional wellbeing. Veterinary care is provided where needed, including treatment, neutering and vaccination when appropriate.
We take time to understand each animal before rehoming, so we can make better decisions about their housing, companionship, diet and long-term needs.
Animals surrendered to us are treated as part of the rescue family. People who need to rehome a pet are treated respectfully and without judgement, because our priority is helping animals in need.
We know that people ask for help for many reasons. Being kind and practical gives animals the best chance of getting the support they need.
Small animals are often overlooked and misunderstood. We aim to share accurate, up-to-date care advice and support owners of rabbits, rodents and other small animals, whether they adopted from us or not.
Better information can prevent avoidable suffering, improve setups and help people feel more confident caring for the animals they love.
We know situations change. People can find themselves needing help for all sorts of reasons: illness, bereavement, housing changes, family circumstances, unexpected litters, behaviour concerns, or simply realising an animal needs more specialist care than they were first told.
Our approach is kind, practical and non-judgemental. We would much rather someone ask for help early than struggle alone until the situation becomes urgent.
Our focus is always the same: what does this animal need now, and what will help them have a safe future?
There is a lot of conflicting information about small animal care. We want to help people understand what these animals really need: space, enrichment, companionship where appropriate, safe housing, suitable diets and access to veterinary care.
Good welfare is not about doing one big thing. It is lots of small daily things done properly: clean housing, suitable bedding, the right food, safe handling, enrichment, companionship where appropriate, and knowing when something is wrong.
Greatfield has also partnered with other rodent rescues to create SPRAW, Small Pet Rodent Awareness Week, helping raise awareness of the needs of these amazing animals.
